Nashville MTA - Smart Going!

Doing Business With Nashville MTA
The Metropolitan Transit Authority runs bus and trolley service for Nashville and the surrounding area. To provide our services, we rely on a broad range of contractors and suppliers who work with us through the procurement process. The goods and services we purchase are crucial to providing safe, reliable transportation for our customers.

Goods and services purchased by the MTA range from paper clips to articulated buses. We have an operating budget of about $31 million a year. We encourage small businesses owned by minorities and women to pursue contracts to compete for MTA business.

To make it easier for you to do business with the MTA, we've prepared this web site area to explain our procurement process system, and let you know how we select our vendors.

What do we buy? Whom do we buy it from?

Like any company we purchase everything from office supplies, paint and uniforms to buses and bus parts, etc. We buy from small businesses and large corporations.

Is selling to the MTA difficult?

The MTA procurement process is easy, once you learn the system. Each contract is detailed and contains specific requirements that vendors must meet.

How can I learn about upcoming bid opportunities?

To reach as many potential vendors as possible, the MTA uses the Tennessean as its primary source for advertising. You can also get the information you need from this web site by clicking on the Procurement button within the left menu area of every page.

What are the criteria for obtaining certification?

The eligibility requirements as a DBE or M/WBE by the MTA are similar. To be eligible for certification under either federal or state program, your firm will be required to submit documentation showing it is an ongoing independent business enterprise that is owned, operated and controlled by a "socially and economically disadvantaged" individual (for DBEs) or by a "minority group member" or a woman (for M/WBEs). Generally, your business should have been in operation for at least a year.

If your business is not located in Tennessee, you may wish to get certification in your home state. This may accelerate the certification process with the MTA.

How does DBE or M/WBE Certification help get business?

Based on federal and state guidelines, the Division may set goals for participation of these vendors on a contract.

When a contract is ready for bid, the MTA identifies available qualified DBE and M/WBE vendors and sends a list to the venders seeking bids.
